How long is the probation period for a new teacher in Indian schools?

Most private schools in India put new teachers on a 6–12 month probation period. During probation, either party can terminate with a shorter notice (usually 30 days). Full confirmation typically comes at the start of the next academic session.

Probation is standard across CBSE, ICSE and IB private schools.

Typical terms

  • Duration: 6–12 months, most commonly 12 months to align with the academic calendar.
  • Notice period during probation: 30 days (either side).
  • Confirmation: Written letter at the end of probation, often tied to the end-of-year appraisal.
  • PF and gratuity: Statutory PF starts from day 1 if the school is covered. Gratuity accrual usually only counts confirmed service.

What's appraised

  • Classroom observation scores (typically 2–3 formal observations)
  • Board results / assessment outcomes
  • Punctuality and administrative compliance
  • Parent and coordinator feedback

Red flags to negotiate

  • Probation extended beyond 12 months without written cause
  • "Salary revision after confirmation" without a stated percentage
  • No formal review in writing at 3 and 6 months
