How to write a teacher application letter (with samples)
An Indian school principal opens 40+ teacher applications a week. Most read like a CV pasted into an email. The ones that get a demo-class call answer four questions in the first paragraph: which post are you applying for, which classes and board can you teach, where are you based, and when can you join. This guide gives you a ready template plus PRT, TGT and PGT samples you can adapt in ten minutes.
The structure Indian principals actually want
Keep it to 180–220 words, five short paragraphs. Paragraph 1: which post you're applying for and where you saw it. Paragraph 2: qualifications, subject, board and CTET / TET status. Paragraph 3: teaching experience with one quantified outcome. Paragraph 4: notice period, availability and city. Paragraph 5: attachments and a request for a demo-class slot.
Send it as the email body, not only as an attachment. Attach the CV and CTET / TET scorecard as PDFs named 'YourName_CV.pdf' and 'YourName_CTET.pdf'. Use the subject line 'Application — {Designation} {Subject} — {Your Name}, CTET Paper {n}'.
PGT sample — Post Graduate Teacher, English (CBSE)
Subject: Application — PGT English — Ananya Sharma, CTET Paper 2 (2024) Dear Principal, I'm writing to apply for the PGT English vacancy at Delhi Public School Noida, advertised on School Jobs India. I hold an M.A. English (Delhi University, 2021) and B.Ed (Jamia Millia Islamia, 2022), and I've cleared CTET Paper 2 in 2024. I have three years of PGT English experience across Classes 11–12 at DAV Public School, Gurugram — my Class 12 batch's 2025 board average was 82.4 in English Core, against a school average of 76.

TGT sample — Trained Graduate Teacher, Maths (ICSE)
Subject: Application — TGT Mathematics — Rohit Menon, CTET Paper 2 (2023) Dear Principal, I'd like to apply for the TGT Mathematics vacancy at St. Xavier's High School, Mumbai, listed on School Jobs India. I have a B.Sc Mathematics (Mumbai University, 2020), B.Ed (SNDT, 2021), and CTET Paper 2 (2023). Over the last four years I've taught Classes 6–10 Mathematics at Podar International School, Powai — my Class 10 section's ICSE prelim average lifted from 68 to 79 across two years.

PRT sample — Primary Teacher, General (CBSE, fresher)
Subject: Application — PRT (Classes 1–5) — Meera Iyer, CTET Paper 1 (2025) Dear Principal, I'm applying for the PRT vacancy at Amity International School, Sector 46 Gurugram, advertised on School Jobs India. I completed my B.El.Ed (Lady Shri Ram College, 2024) and cleared CTET Paper 1 earlier this year. My teaching practicum was at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya where I ran end-to-end Class 3 English units for a full term, and the mentor teacher's feedback report is attached.

Common mistakes to avoid
Don't write 'Respected Sir/Madam'. Address the principal by name where the listing shows it. Don't say 'kindly do the needful'. Don't attach the letter as a Word file — PDF only. Don't leave the subject line as 'Job Application' — principals filter by role and CTET status in Gmail search.
Don't apply from a Gmail address like 'coolteacher99@gmail.com'. Create 'firstname.lastname@gmail.com' if needed. And always follow up once after 7 days if you haven't heard back — a short two-line nudge, not a re-send of the full letter.

The fastest route is the 'Apply' button on each School Jobs India listing — it routes your letter and CV directly into the school's inbox with the correct subject line already filled in. If the school also lists a direct HR email, send to both.
