The first DAV school was started after the demise of Swami Dayanand to serve as his memorial. A group of enlightened, dedicated and devoted followers, with a deep sense of social commitment founded the Dayananand Anglo-Vedic College Trust and Managing Society which was registered in 1886. The society established its first school at Lahore the same year, with Lala Hansraj (later known as Mahatma Hansraj) as the honorary Headmaster. Thus started the movement which has been running from Kashmir to Kanyakumari since then.
