Job description

Overview

St. Augustine's School is hiring a Academic Coordinator in Kalimpong, West Bengal. The role is well-scoped, supported by detailed academic planning, and offers a clear path for professional growth. St. Augustine's School in Kalimpong, West Bengal operates as a senior secondary school, established 1945, — a ICSE / CISCE-affiliated school. A settled, professional environment with clear academic systems, structured staff meetings, and steady infrastructure investment. What the role looks like: the Academic Coordinator owns outcomes for the assigned section/portfolio — academic quality, faculty development, parent engagement, and student wellbeing — and contributes to the school's strategic plans. Responsibilities:

  • Lead the assigned section/department on academic and operational matters.
  • Mentor teachers through observation, feedback, and development plans.
  • Oversee assessment cycles, result analysis, and improvement plans.
  • Handle parent escalations professionally and represent the school externally.
  • Drive a culture of academic rigour, discipline, and student wellbeing. Candidate requirements:
  • Senior educator with a balanced view of academics and operations.
  • Proven ability to mentor teachers and improve outcomes over time.
  • Strong stakeholder management — board, parents, regulators, vendors.
  • Comfortable with data — assessments, attendance, faculty metrics.
  • A long-term thinker who can also execute well in the short term. Perks and culture:
  • Fair compensation with annual review (₹12.7 LPA – ₹13.9 LPA).
  • Stable, full-time engagement with a clear academic calendar.
  • Regular PD through internal and external programmes.
  • A working culture that takes faculty wellbeing seriously.
  • A school that genuinely cares about student outcomes. Submit your application on this page and St. Augustine's School will weigh your candidacy for the opening. Next steps usually include a short demo class and a panel discussion.

Common questions about this role

What is the leave policy?

Schools usually offer 10–18 leaves per year on top of public/school holidays. Earned-leave encashment policies vary — check the offer letter.

Is B.Ed mandatory for this role?

For most K-12 teaching positions in India a B.Ed (or NIOS D.El.Ed for primary) is preferred and often required by board affiliations. Some pre-primary and special-skill roles accept relevant certification in lieu.

Are detailed lesson plans expected?

Most schools expect weekly lesson plans submitted to the coordinator/HOD, plus unit plans at the start of each term. Templates are usually provided.

Do staff get fee concession for their children?

Many established schools offer 50–100% tuition concession for the children of full-time staff, subject to admission criteria. Confirm specifics in the offer letter.

What does a typical day look like?

School days usually run 7.5–8 hours with 5–6 teaching periods, plus prep, lunch and one or two non-teaching duties (homework checks, library, club). Saturdays vary by school.

Are meals provided at school?

Subsidised tea/snacks are common; full meals depend on the school. Boarding schools usually provide meals as part of the package for resident staff.

St Augustine, the Patron of our School, was born at Thagaste in Africa in the year 354 A.D. As a young man he led an unsettled life both in the philosophy he professed and his moral behaviour, but later in the year 387 A.D. he was converted and received baptism at Milan from the bishop Saint Ambrose. He came back to his own country and led the life of an ascetic. Elected Bishop of Hoppo, for 34 yearshe was an exemplary Bishop to his people teaching them by his sermons and writings. He died in the year 430 A.D.

Interview questions & answers for Academic Coordinator

Common questions Indian schools ask for Academic Coordinator roles in Kalimpong (CISCE panel) — with a short sample answer for each so you can walk in prepared.

  1. 1. How should I answer the salary expectation question?

Give a range, not a single number. Anchor on the typical Academic Coordinator band in Kalimpong (see the Salary snapshot on this page) plus a 10-15% premium for your experience. Say you're open to discussion once the role scope is confirmed.

  2. 2. How would you handle a difficult parent meeting?

Listen first, restate the concern, share data (assessment scores, work samples, incident notes), then propose two next steps with a follow-up date. Emphasise you'd loop in the coordinator/HOD for anything unresolved — schools want partnership, not solo heroics.

  3. 3. Why do you want to work at St. Augustine's School?

Show you've done the homework: reference the ICSE curriculum, the Kalimpong campus, and one specific programme or value from their website. Tie it to what you bring — pedagogy, subject expertise or a co-curricular strength.

  4. 4. How should I prepare for the demo lesson?

Plan a 20-25 minute segment aligned to the ICSE curriculum for the exact grade the school specifies. Include a clear objective, 2-3 questioning prompts, a short activity, and a closing check-for-understanding. Bring a printed lesson plan for the observer.

  5. 5. Why did you choose teaching as a career?

Anchor it in a specific moment — a mentor, a classroom win, or an impact story on a student. Panels want authenticity plus a link to the future ("that's why I want to work with Grade X at your school"), not a scripted "I love kids" answer.

  6. 6. What is your greatest strength and weakness as an educator?

Pick a strength tied to student outcomes with one metric or story. For weakness, name a real one, follow it with the concrete steps you're taking (workshop, mentor, changed practice) — panels reject rehearsed non-answers like "I work too hard".
