How do I get IB (International Baccalaureate) teacher certification?
IB certification is done through the IB's official Certificate in Teaching and Learning (IB Cert) programs, offered by IB-approved universities worldwide. There are three levels: Certificate, Advanced Certificate, and Leadership. Most IB schools hire teachers who then complete Category 1 workshops as they teach.
The IB does not require certification before hiring — many teachers get certified on the job.
Pathways
- On-the-job (most common): Join an IB school as a subject teacher, then complete IB Category 1 workshops (3 days, in-person or online) organized by the school within your first year.
- Pre-hire certificate: Complete an IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning at an approved university — typically 6–12 months, online, ~USD 3,000–5,000.
- Master's route: An M.Ed. in International Education from an IB-approved university opens Leadership and Coordinator roles.
Which programme?
Choose by target role:
- Classroom teacher → Category 1 workshop after being hired.
- Subject leader / coordinator → Advanced Certificate.
- IB Coordinator / Head of School → Leadership Certificate.
Salary uplift
IB-trained teachers typically earn 30–50% more than CBSE peers at the same experience level in India.
