How to become a PRT (Primary Teacher) in India

PRT — Primary Teacher — is the most common entry point into Indian K-12 teaching. The role covers Classes 1 to 5 and, in many schools, Pre-Primary too. The path from undergraduate to your first paid PRT classroom takes 18–36 months depending on which qualification route you pick. Here's how to compress that timeline and land your first role at a reputable school.

Step 1 — Pick a qualification route

Three routes work: B.El.Ed (4-year integrated, Delhi University ecosystem), D.El.Ed (2-year diploma, NIOS or state board), or graduation + NTT/B.Ed primary. Most CBSE and ICSE private schools accept any of these; central government schools (KV, NVS, EMRS) typically demand D.El.Ed or B.El.Ed.

If you're already a graduate, the fastest route is a 2-year D.El.Ed. If you're starting from Class 12, B.El.Ed is more rigorous and is increasingly preferred by tier-1 schools — but it's a 4-year commitment.

Step 2 — Clear CTET Paper 1 (or your state TET)

CTET Paper 1 is the gatekeeper for PRT roles in CBSE schools and all central government schools. It's a 150-question MCQ paper covering child development, language I and II, mathematics and environmental studies. Validity is lifetime since 2021.

Most state private schools accept either CTET or the state TET. If you're locked to a particular state for personal reasons, prepare for both — the overlap is roughly 70%.

Step 3 — Get classroom hours before you apply

Your B.El.Ed or D.El.Ed practicum is real teaching experience — name the school, name the classes, name the units you taught. If your course doesn't include a practicum yet, take a 3-month internship at any CBSE/ICSE school, or run home tuition for a group of primary children. Two to three months of consistent classroom hours is enough to answer interview pedagogy questions concretely.

Step 4 — Apply at the right schools

Highest fresher-hiring volume comes from network schools: DPS, Ryan, GD Goenka, Podar, VIBGYOR, Amity branches. They have structured induction and they hire PRT cohorts twice a year (April and September). Independent neighbourhood CBSE/ICSE schools hire year-round but in smaller numbers.

Step 5 — Demo class and offer

Most schools ask for a 25–30 minute demo for a real Class 2, 3 or 4 section. Prepare a hook, a hands-on activity, and a clean closure. Bring printed worksheets. Practice on family or friends with a timer.

Fresher PRT salaries in 2026: tier-1 metros ₹2.5–4 LPA, tier-2 cities ₹1.8–3 LPA, central government schools ₹4–6 LPA (7th Pay Commission). Anything materially below these ranges is a sign of a weak employer — walk away.
