What high school (PGT) roles look like
A PGT usually handles 3-5 sections of one subject across Classes 11 and 12 — 20-24 teaching periods a week — plus one or two Class 9-10 sections to keep the load full. On top of teaching hours, expect exam paper-setting, moderation, mentoring for a project group, and career-counselling sessions during the pre-board window.
The upside: PGTs get the best students, the most subject-focused work, and the highest pay in a school. The downside: board-exam outcomes are your KPI, and one weak batch can put career growth on hold.
PGT salary bands by subject and board
Maths / Physics / Chemistry / Economics PGTs (highest paid): ₹42,000-₹75,000 at CBSE, ₹65,000-₹1,25,000 at IB/IGCSE.
Biology / Business Studies / Accountancy PGTs: ₹38,000-₹62,000 at CBSE, ₹55,000-₹1,05,000 at IB/IGCSE.
English / Psychology / Political Science PGTs: ₹35,000-₹55,000 at CBSE, ₹52,000-₹92,000 at IB/IGCSE.
Regional-language PGTs (Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi): ₹28,000-₹45,000 at CBSE, ₹42,000-₹72,000 at premium ICSE/IB schools with strong Indian-languages programmes.
How PGT hiring is different from PRT/TGT
Subject test is harder. Expect Class 12 board-level plus 15-20% JEE/NEET-level questions in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. Schools want teachers who can also anchor entrance-exam coaching.
Demo class is on senior-secondary content. A Class 11 or 12 topic assigned 48 hours in advance. Panels grade on subject accuracy, board-exam alignment, and how you handle a difficult student question — often planted by an evaluator.
The principal interview is longer. Expect 45-60 minutes covering board-result track record, examiner experience, willingness to take extra classes, and salary. Bring hard data: last three years of board averages for your sections, if you have them.
