Freelance platforms (Chegg, TutorMe, Preply) pay per hour completed (₹300-₹800/hr) — you set availability, they route students. Volatility is real: weekends and exam months boom, mid-terms are lean.
Direct independent tuitions (a family finds you on School Jobs India) pay the highest rate — ₹800-₹2,500/hr — because there's no platform take. But you own scheduling, invoicing, tax filing and parent relations.
How to price yourself as a new online tutor
Anchor to the CBSE class you can teach best: Class 5-8 ₹300-₹500/hr · Class 9-10 ₹500-₹800 · Class 11-12 Sciences ₹800-₹1,500. Bump 20-30% for IB DP or IGCSE. Bump 30-50% for NRI/international-family tuitions billed in USD.
