Is B.Ed mandatory to teach in a private school in India?

B.Ed is mandatory for CBSE, ICSE and government schools. Some IB / IGCSE and pre-primary schools hire without B.Ed if you have equivalent international certification.

Is B.Ed mandatory?

  • CBSE / ICSE / State board schools: yes — NCTE mandates B.Ed for classes I–XII.
  • Government schools (KVS, NVS, state): yes, plus TET/CTET.
  • IB / Cambridge IGCSE schools: often accept an international teaching certificate (PGCE, IB Educator Certificate, Cambridge PDQ) in place of B.Ed for subject teachers.
  • Pre-primary / Montessori: a Montessori diploma or NTT is usually enough.
  • Coaching / tutoring: no formal requirement.

Without B.Ed you can start as a teaching assistant or coordinator and complete B.Ed in parallel (many universities offer distance mode).
