How many years is the B.Ed course in India?
A regular B.Ed is 2 years. A shorter 1-year B.Ed exists only for M.A./M.Sc. holders. The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) after 12th is 4 years.
NCTE regulates B.Ed durations in India:
- Regular B.Ed: 2 years (4 semesters), post-graduation. This is the standard.
- 1-year B.Ed: Available only to candidates with a Master's degree in Sciences/Social Sciences/Humanities/Commerce with ≥55%. Offered by select universities including IGNOU.
- ITEP (Integrated): 4-year BA-B.Ed / B.Sc-B.Ed / B.Com-B.Ed programme, launched under NEP 2020, replacing the old sequential route.
- Distance / ODL B.Ed: 2 years, currently allowed by NCTE only for in-service teachers.
From 2030, NEP envisions ITEP becoming the primary route into teaching, with 1-year B.Ed positioned as a post-Master's add-on.
