Is CTET valid for state government teacher jobs?
CTET is accepted by most states for their state government teacher recruitments in addition to their own State TET. A handful of states (notably Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and a few others) still require you to clear the specific State TET separately.
CTET is accepted by the majority of Indian states as a valid teacher-eligibility qualification for state government teacher recruitment, in addition to their own State TET. However, a few states — most prominently Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and some regional-language-heavy states — require candidates to clear their own State TET separately, because the State TET tests knowledge of the local language and state education context.
States that accept CTET for state recruitment
- Uttar Pradesh (with UPTET as an alternative)
- Madhya Pradesh
- Bihar (BPSC TRE explicitly accepts CTET)
- Rajasthan (via REET as the main test; CTET accepted for KVS-like posts)
- Haryana
- Jharkhand
- Uttarakhand
- Chhattisgarh
- Punjab (partially — check the specific notification)
- Delhi (DSSSB)
States that generally require their own TET
- Tamil Nadu (TNTET) — CTET alone is not accepted for TN government schools.
- West Bengal (WB TET) — WB Primary TET / WB SLST required for state posts.
- Kerala (K-TET) — required for Kerala government and aided schools.
- Karnataka (KARTET) — required for state posts.
- Andhra Pradesh (APTET) / Telangana (TSTET) — required for state posts.
Why the divide
State TETs test the regional language and local education setup — Tamil in TNTET, Bengali in WB TET, Malayalam in K-TET. CTET tests only Hindi and English as languages, which is why regional-language-heavy states insist on their own test.
Practical advice
- If you want to teach anywhere in India — take CTET first, then the State TET of the state you want to work in.
- If you are targeting a specific state — take that State TET directly.
- CTET is a lifetime-valid certificate, so it is always worth having.
