What qualifications do I need to become a special educator in India?
To work as a special educator in Indian schools, you need an RCI-recognised qualification — a B.Ed in Special Education (2 years) or a diploma from an RCI-approved institution, plus RCI registration (CRR number). Following the RTE Act, most CBSE/ICSE schools are now required to have at least one special educator on staff.
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and RTE Act have made special educators one of the highest-demand teacher roles in India.
Qualification pathways
- B.Ed. Special Education — 2 years, RCI-recognised, offers specialisation in Learning Disability, Autism, Intellectual Disability, or Hearing/Visual Impairment.
- Diploma in Special Education (D.Ed. Spl. Ed.) — 2 years, RCI-approved, entry-level.
- Post-Graduate Professional Diploma in Special Education — For candidates who already have a general B.Ed.
All programmes must be RCI-approved. After completion, apply for a Central Rehabilitation Register (CRR) number — schools require this for hiring.
Salary
Special educators typically earn ₹3.5–7.5 LPA at private schools, comparable to TGT/PGT. In IB and IGCSE schools with strong inclusion policies, salaries reach ₹9–14 LPA for senior roles.
