Who is eligible for a TGT teacher post in India?

To become a TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) in India you need a bachelor's degree in the subject you want to teach plus a B.Ed, and you must clear CTET or the relevant State TET.

To be eligible for a TGT post you need a bachelor's degree (usually with at least 50% marks) in the subject you want to teach, plus a B.Ed, and a valid CTET Paper 2 or State TET Paper 2 score. TGT stands for Trained Graduate Teacher and covers Classes 6 to 10.

The three requirements

  1. Graduation — a B.A., B.Sc., B.Com. or equivalent with the teaching subject as one of the main papers. Most government recruiters (KVS, NVS, DSSSB, state boards) require 50% aggregate; some relax this to 45% for reserved categories.
  2. B.Ed — a two-year Bachelor of Education from an NCTE-recognised institution.
  3. Teacher Eligibility Test — CTET Paper 2 for central schools (KVS, NVS, Kendriya Vidyalayas) or the State TET Paper 2 for state government schools. Private schools increasingly ask for it too.

Age and other conditions

  • Age limit for KVS/NVS TGT: usually 35 years (relaxations apply).
  • Some recruiters require the graduation subjects to match the teaching subject exactly (for example, a B.Sc. with Physics + Chemistry + Maths is needed to teach Science as a TGT in KVS).
