What math teachers do at Indian schools

A TGT Math teacher typically handles 4-5 sections across Classes 6-10 — algebra, geometry, mensuration, statistics and coordinate geometry. Section-teacher duty (attendance, monitoring, parent updates) usually adds 1-2 periods a day.

A PGT Math teacher owns Class 11-12 sections — calculus, vectors, 3-D geometry, probability. Board-exam preparation is heavier: mock papers, doubt clinics, IIT-JEE overlap for interested students.

IB DP Math teachers deliver either AA (Analysis & Approaches) or AI (Applications & Interpretation) at Standard or Higher Level. Both include an Internal Assessment (IA) that eats 8-12 hours of moderation per class per term.

Salary bands by board (Math, 5-8 years experience)

CBSE schools: ₹35,000-₹75,000/mo

ICSE schools: ₹45,000-₹90,000/mo

IB / IGCSE international schools: ₹65,000-₹1,50,000/mo

Bands reflect experienced teachers (5-8 years). Freshers usually start 25-40% below the lower bound; department heads sit 20-40% above the upper bound. Math specialists in short supply command a 10-25% premium.

How to stand out in a math teacher interview

Prepare a 30-minute demo class on a hard concept students commonly fail (integration, moles-equivalent, mensuration word problems). Bring a marked answer script showing your feedback style.

Show board results from prior schools — average marks, distinction count, and the % of your class that scored above 90. Math is a results-heavy subject; principals want quantified evidence.

Answer the "weak student" question concretely: which topic you'd re-teach, what remedial resource you'd assign, how you'd measure progress in 2 weeks.
