What is the difference between CTET and state TET exams?

CTET is the Central Teacher Eligibility Test conducted by CBSE and is valid for jobs in central-government schools (KVS, NVS, EMRS) and many CBSE-affiliated private schools. State TET (like UPTET, HTET, MPTET) is conducted by each state education board and is valid only for that state's government schools.

CTET/TET is mandatory to teach classes 1–8 in government schools and most CBSE-affiliated private schools in India.

Key differences

  • Authority: CTET is conducted by CBSE (central). State TETs are conducted by each state board.
  • Job validity: CTET qualifies you for KVS, NVS, EMRS, Sainik Schools, and most CBSE private schools nationwide. State TETs are usually valid only in that state.
  • Frequency: CTET is held twice a year (July and December). State TETs vary — some states hold it annually, some every 2–3 years.
  • Certificate validity: Both are now lifetime valid (NCTE 2021 notification).
  • Paper structure: Paper I (Classes 1–5) and Paper II (Classes 6–8). Structure is similar for both.

Which one should you take?

If you want to teach in central-government schools or move across states, take CTET. If you plan to work only in your home state's government schools, the state TET may be enough — but taking CTET as well keeps your options open.
