How do I become a government school teacher in India?

Complete graduation + B.Ed (or 12th + D.El.Ed for primary), clear CTET/state TET, then apply for state or central recruitment drives (KVS, NVS, DSSSB, TGT/PGT, SUPER-TET).

The government-teacher pipeline in India is fairly standardised:

Step 1 — Qualification. Choose your track:

  • Primary (Classes I–V): 10+2 + D.El.Ed / B.El.Ed / ITEP.
  • Upper Primary / Middle (VI–VIII): Graduation + B.Ed.
  • Secondary / Senior Secondary (IX–XII): PG in subject + B.Ed for PGT roles.

Step 2 — Eligibility test. Clear CTET (for central schools) or State TET (for state schools). Some states run their own super-TET / SET.

Step 3 — Recruitment exam. Apply through the relevant body:

  • KVS / NVS / EMRS — central government schools.
  • DSSSB (Delhi), UPSSSC, TSPSC, KPSC, MPTET — state boards.
  • Army Public Schools (APS-CSB), Sainik Schools — semi-government.

Step 4 — Interview & demo. Most recruitments include a demo class + document verification.

Total time from graduation is typically 2–3 years. Salary starts at Level 6/7 of the 7th Pay Commission (₹35,000–₹50,000 basic).
