What kindergarten teachers actually do all day

A typical kindergarten teacher runs a 3.5-hour session with 20-30 children: circle time, phonics or numeracy activity, snack break, art or motor-skill activity, story time, and dismissal. Afternoons are for parent WhatsApp updates, prepping the next day's materials, and monthly report-writing.

The role is physically demanding — you're on your feet 4-5 hours a day with high-energy 3-5 year olds. Schools value stamina, warmth and patience as much as they value your ECCE qualification.

How to interview well for a kindergarten teacher role

Prepare a 15-minute demo class on a topic the school will ask about (usually a phonics sound or a shape/colour concept). Bring 2-3 hands-on props — flashcards alone won't cut it.

Show observation notes from your previous class if you have any. Schools want to see that you actually watch children and can describe individual growth patterns, not just class averages.

Ask about parent-communication norms. Kindergarten HR often filters candidates by how thoughtfully they answer "What would you do if a parent messaged at 10 pm asking why their child cried in class?"
