Authentic Montessori vs Montessori-inspired schools
Authentic Montessori houses follow the AMI or Association Montessori Internationale framework: 3-hour uncompressed work cycle, mixed-age environments (3-6, 6-9, 9-12), full material set, and directress-led (not lesson-plan-led) practice. Salary bands sit at the top end.
Montessori-inspired schools borrow the materials and the ethos but adapt schedules to Indian board-exam calendars. They typically hire AMI-trained directresses for Ages 3-6 and B.Ed.-trained teachers for Elementary. Salary is closer to a standard pre-primary teacher scale.
When applying, ask "Do you follow the 3-hour uncompressed work cycle?" If yes, you're in an authentic environment. If they hesitate, it's Montessori-inspired.
The path to becoming a Montessori teacher in India
Step 1: Diploma. AMI 3-6 diploma is a 9-12 month full-time course — Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad have the largest AMI training centres. NAMC and Indian Montessori Centre offer distance-learning options for working teachers.
Step 2: Assistant year. Most authentic houses ask new directresses to spend 6-12 months as an assistant before leading an environment. Pay is lower but the observation experience is irreplaceable.
Step 3: Lead directress. After the assistant year, you'll lead your own environment of 20-30 children — plan the environment, keep observation records, and hold parent meetings.
